What is Microsoft Purview?
Microsoft Purview is the set of data governance, protection and compliance tools in Microsoft 365. It includes sensitivity labels, data loss prevention, retention policies, audit and eDiscovery.
Is Purview included in Microsoft 365?
Parts of Purview are included in most Microsoft 365 plans, and more advanced features need higher plans or add-ons. Microsoft 365 Business Premium includes information protection and data loss prevention features. We check your licensing before recommending anything.
What are sensitivity labels?
Sensitivity labels classify documents and emails, for example Public, Internal or Confidential, and can apply protection such as encryption and watermarks that stays with the file. See our guide to sensitivity labels.
How does Purview relate to the Essential Eight?
Purview supports data protection and access control outcomes that complement the Essential Eight, such as limiting who can reach sensitive information. See our Essential Eight page for how we help.
Will data loss prevention get in the way of our staff?
Not if it is set up well. We start in audit mode to see what would be caught, tune the rules, and only then start warning or blocking, so staff are not frustrated by false alarms.
Do we need Purview if we use Copilot?
It helps a lot. Microsoft 365 Copilot respects the permissions people already have, so oversharing becomes more visible. Clean permissions and sensitivity labels reduce the chance of Copilot surfacing something it should not. See our Microsoft Copilot page.
How long does a Purview project take?
A basic labelling and data loss prevention setup can be done in a few weeks. Larger projects with retention and compliance requirements take longer. After the assessment we give you a clear plan.
