Review of the Ericsson-LG iPECS eMG 80 & UCP IP PBX system (formerly known as LG Nortel iPECS and LG Aria iPECS)

In Australia Ericsson-LG (formerly known as the LG Nortel iPECS and LG Aria iPECS) offer two different phone systems solutions for SME’s. The iPECS eMG 80 that is a hybrid solution and, UCP 100, UCP 600 and the larger iPECS UCP 2400 that are pure IP solutions. Ericsson-LG also offers enterprise solutions for 30000+ users however, we won’t cover this in this review.

The eMG80 is a hybrid phone system, so it works with PSTN lines, but also has extensive IP options as well so you can take advantage of the cost savings SIP can bring to your business. This means it will work with traditional copper phone lines but it’s also NBN ready. The iPECS eMG80 can scale from just a few users using the system, up to 48 users.

Unlike the eMG, the UCP range is an IP only series, so all calls are made via the internet using the SIP protocol. The model numbers of each system roughly denote the number of users each model can handle. Each of the models in the series, UCP 100, 600 & 2400 share the same architecture offering you the ultimate scalability as your business grows.

The Ericsson-LG iPECS PBX uses a modular IP call server and offers users the ability to connect not only the latest SIP trunks (VoIP phone lines that can run over the NBN/Fibre internet) but also traditional ISDN and PSTN services from any existing carrier. No matter what type of connection you have available, you’re covered.

The iPECS IP PBX also allows users to connect a myriad of different handsets – 7000 digital series, 7000 IP series, 8000 IP series, 9000 digital & IP series, IP DECT, DECT, and even the GDC wireless phone handset. Whether you’re after mobility, or simply the latest gigabit IP video phones, Ericsson-LG’s iPECS eMG series has you covered.

It’s a giant leap forward for Ericsson-LG and with the intelligence of the platform, and Telstra really pushing the product, it has quickly established itself as a dominant player again in Australia.

The Good. (Perhaps even the GREAT in this case)

Normally it’s hard to know where to start with a good phone system, however, in this case, it’s easy…… the price.

The latest iPECS eMG 80 phone system is incredibly priced. It’s so much cheaper than other leading solutions that we really can’t believe LG introduced it. We’re confused because for companies up to 48 staff, you wouldn’t buy the other iPECS offerings, or basically any other system for that reason. It not only decimates the competition but also their own product offerings. That said, you, the consumer, are the real winner in their unusual pricing strategy.

The functionality on offer is comparable in most (if not all) cases, with the Avaya and Cisco’s of the world. Even we were surprised when we went through the specs for the first time!

What you get as a customer is a flexible, intelligent and very sophisticated IP phone system that is also easy to use. Whether you’re a small business just starting out or a multinational company with multiple sites and call centre requirements, it runs the entire gamut. Just because it says it’s an IP system doesn’t mean you need to use IP. Whether you have the NBN (or a higher bandwidth product such as business fibre) or you still use the traditional copper phone lines in your area you can use this phone system. he intelligent architecture on the iPECS also allows for many different types of phone line connections such as PSTN, ISDN 2 (basic rate), Onramp 10 (primary rate or multiline) as well as SIP and H323 VoIP trunks.

The system will even allow you to use existing Ericsson-LG digital handsets, so if you’re upgrading, this can significantly reduce your total implementation costs. The Ericsson-LG iPECS has built-in voicemail and advanced incoming call distribution (auto attendant) functionality (this was a paid option on the previous Ericsson-LG Systems). These two features will help any business to sound more professional and will genuinely enhance the way you work, day and night. You’ll never miss another call again!

Another major selling point of the Ericsson-LG iPECS phone system is it carries on the LG tradition of very easy to use systems. People who have seen some of the more complicated IP offerings love this more traditional design. The handsets, for which you can opt from either the 7000 IP, 8000 IP series, or the 9000 digital (for the eMG80 only) and 9000 IP phones are beautifully simple and your staff will be able to use them within minutes. This intuitive design cannot be underestimated and has been a major reason behind the incredible popularity of the Ericsson-LG brand.

iPECS also provides WiFi and IP-DECT mobility options. This means you can set-up a network of access points for an in-house wireless or DECT cordless solution. This is great for businesses with large floor space areas or warehousing who want to keep their staff in close contact with each other.

Here are just some of the key features available on the Ericsson-LG iPECS platform:

  • SIP trunking for the best type of VoIP services and cheapest calls
  • Can connect to traditional phone services like ISDN and PSTN
  • All the essential features you’d expect like voicemail, hold, transfer, speed dialling, auto attendant, PC attendant, and more.
  • Unified messaging to allow you to receive all your emails, voicemail and faxes in your inbox, no matter where you are.
  • A soft phone application that creates a virtual phone on your PC or laptop. This allows you to see if office staff are on the phone, transfer and conference calls and much more, even if you’re thousands of kilometres away
  • A mobile phone Sip application that allows call features including dial, pick up, hold, transfer, conferencing, SMS and even call log.
  • Proven and ultra reliable Linux based platform
  • Very easy to use handsets whether they are IP or digital
  • Call centre Application (option)
  • 32 channel/ group conferencing
  • Advanced incoming call distribution for call centres for sophisticated call routing
  • Great for multiple site networking & remote users
  • Administrator software and self programming is very easy and there isn’t much you can’t do yourself – this saves you money
  • Easy Network Integration whether multiple sites or remote IP workers
  • Phontage Soft console is simple and easy to use
  • Integrated Firewall
  • Remote Access Server. VPN support
  • Supports digital, Analogue or IP handsets
  • Full synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook
  • PC operator console available for more advanced use (option)
  • Voicemail is very versatile allowing you to control and listen to messages with on screen prompts, listen to callers before picking up
  • IP call recording and record conversations (option)
  • DECT compatible

And much, much more…..

What a list! The features themselves are fantastic, but the intelligent way that the system performs them is even better. Ease of use is something that is consistent across all of the default and the optional applications.

What’s not so good about the Ericsson-LG (Not much!)

As you’ve read from above, it’s hard to fault the technological pedigree of the latest Ericsson-LG iPECS solutions.

Although we’ve mentioned the incredibly low pricing of the latest eMG80 phone system, we see the biggest drawback of the solution is the price point many companies are offering it at. When it is sold at the right price it’s amazing.

However, we see some companies charging 50-100% more for no explicable reason! Why would anyone pay twice as much for a solution that does the same as another? This price gouging does a disservice to the brand and robs many people of a great solution, or leaves people paying too much for the one they purchased. When you compare it to the pricing for the world’s biggest selling SME solution, the Avaya IP 500 it is good value for money offering a great range of features and reliability for SMEs, but any higher and the LG is simply not the smart choice..

The Bottom Line

The fact that the latest Ericsson-LG iPECS pbx is a great solution is no longer in contention. If you end up with one of these solutions you will be very happy indeed. Just make sure you compare prices for this solution and get the best deal you can. No matter what type of business you operate, or size, the iPECS really has a solution for everyone.

Our number one suggestion is that a solution like the iPECS is only going to be as good as the care and thought that goes into tailoring it for you. Many phone companies know what the systems CAN do but don’t want to go to the trouble of implementing these features. Unfortunately, as a consumer, you’ll be none the wiser. Read the brochures and the features above and make sure you get the right solution with everything that can help your business improve productivity, mobility and save money.

Remember, if you have less than 48 staff the latest LG eMG80 phone system is the smarter option by a country mile over the larger iPECS models.

iPecs Phone System Features & Tech Specs

Below you’ll find a list we’ve compiled of popular iPecs phone system features. We have included features for both small and larger enterprises alike. Many of the iPecs features are standard. Where you require additional licences we have indicated this also. These features can literally transform the way you communicate so we hope you find it helpful.

TRANSFERRING CALLS

In order to manage incoming call traffic effectively you must be able to transfer calls quickly and efficiently. The ability to do this is one of the key reasons businesses upgrade to the latest feature-packed phone systems. Micro phone systems lets you do this at just a touch, letting any handset user direct callers to the other staff with ease. Also, because you’ll have at least 2+ phone lines, someone else can be on another call at the same time too.

HOLD FUNCTIONALITY

The most commonly used button on your new handset will be the ‘hold’ button – and with good reason. It’s essential for smooth, professional handling of calls. Rather than (ineffectively and unprofessionally) cupping a hand over the mouthpiece, staff can place a customer on hold at the touch of a button, and they won’t be able to hear what’s going on in the background

CORDLESS PHONE COMPATIBILITY

Many home offices start off with a cordless phone or two, and you get used to having the ability to take the phone around the house. Don’t worry. With phone systems for small businesses you can still connect you cordless phone to it -you can even use the one you may already have. Please note that your current cordless phone won’t give you any of the basic phone system features your desk phone does, such as call conferencing or one-touch transfers. However, you will still be able to call out, receive calls and even have calls transferred from the desk phone to you.

DAY & NIGHT GREETINGS

Day & night greetings ensure your callers receive a polished, professional impression of your company, first time, any time. In a small office often there are times when you’re on a call and no one else is there. The phone system will actually be able to pick up, answer the call, and keep them on hold until you are ready. No more juggling!
Regardless of how busy you get in your day, a day & night greeting system means valuable callers will be looked after. A tailored greeting such as “Thank you for calling ABC, your call is important and we will be with you in just a moment” will be heard by the caller, who will then be placed on hold automatically to wait until you can attend to them.
At night this message can be changed to something more appropriate, such as “Welcome to ABC, our office is currently unattended. However if you would like to leave a message our staff will return your call the following business day.” In this way your business will always sound great and never miss another sales opportunity.

PERSONAL VOICEMAIL

Whether you’re out of the office or just on another call a personal voicemail will back you up. Unlike some home services where you have to pay to retrieve messages it is absolutely FREE with a phone system. (On some phone systems voicemail is an option whereas it is included as standard on others).
Personal voicemail works in exactly the same way as it does on your mobile phone. Callers hear a personalised greeting and are invited to leave a message. You can then access these greetings, save them, replay, forward or delete them as necessary.
Voicemail is available to all system users but if required you can specify which of your staff have access to the service. Users are notified that they have a message by a bright red light on the handset. Now, rather than having to take phone messages for colleagues, you can now simply transfer a call to the user’s voicemail system and let them leave a message. The great thing about voicemail is that both your staff and callers will already be familiar with the concept and therefore happy to use it.

VOICEMAIL TO EMAIL

For many people in small business they are often out and about and not always at their desks. No matter where you are your voicemail can now be sent to your email. This means if you have a smart phone you’ll be able to listen to your office emails on your mobile phone, laptop or iPad.

Auto attendant

For some home offices wanting to present a BIG image then an auto attendant can be ideal. It answers the calls and gives options for different extensions with your company. You may only have 3 staff but you sound like you’ve got 100.
For example, “Welcome to ABC, for all sales enquiries please press 1, for accounts press 2. For all other enquiries please hold and an operator will be with you shortly.” The customer doesn’t need to know that the same person may answer for every department!
The menu tree options provided can be as simple or as complex as your business requires. The auto attendant function can also be used to simply take any overflow calls you or your staff are unable to get to in time. Either way, it is very efficient and incredibly effective.

Conference Calls

With business being conducted both nationally and globally nowadays, getting people to meet in person isn’t always possible. You can conference call seamlessly with whoever you need to, getting a real time conversation going with up to as many parties as you like (dependant on number of phone lines and system capacity). Simply place your caller on hold, select a new line and join the calls by pressing the conference button. It’s as simple as that!

Cheap VoIP Calls

Some phone systems allow you to connect a multitude of different VoIP services, from VoDSL to SIP trunking. This can translate to huge savings on line rental and external call costs, as well as free internal calls – even if those calls are to other staff in different locations. The savings may even be enough to pay for the entire system.
Check out our VoIP rates now for yourself. Or to learn what VoIP is and how VoIP works simply click here.

User friendly handsets

Despite the power and complexity of a home office phone system the user friendly handsets make accessing features easy. Some systems do this better than others. With any pbx system there are many different handset models to choose from, usually a basic, executive and a receptionist model. Let us help you choose the right mix of handsets for your business.
Better handsets typically feature large, backlit digital displays to give users the information they need to make calls quickly and easily. Different menu options will be automatically displayed on screen, and these change to the most relevant choices depending on what task the user is currently performing.
Also with more and more people working remotely, our customers have said one of their favourite features is being able to see who is on the phone. This was a feature that was only on large business systems, however, this is now a standard feature on the new generation of hybrid & cloud phone systems for small business.
Features such as mute, redial, volume, conference etc are very typical and offer users fast, easy access. Meanwhile, some handsets offer programmable buttons with digital labels, so that these keys are always correctly and clearly annotated.
The bottom line is that you can choose from a wide range of handsets with most solutions and mix and match to meet the needs of your staff. Equip power users with higher-end phones, whilst selecting more basic models for less intensive applications. It’s the smart way to get the performance you want, at the price you need.

LG iPECS eMG80 Phone System

The LG iPECS eMG80 PBX is the latest offering from Ericsson LG, and it’s undoubtedly the best value solution we’ve seen – period! It’s no surprise customers can’t get them installed fast enough. It offers all the features of its larger brother the iPECS eMG 800 at a fraction of the price, and will work seamlessly with VoIP (to make calls over the internet e.g. the NBN) as well as traditional copper phone lines. The eMG80 will even expand up to 48 users as well as working with every handset on offer from LG.

Ericsson-LG iPECS-eMG80 Phone System

The LG iPECS eMG80 phone system is a simply brilliant solution for SME business from 2-48 staff. We don’t use the word ‘brilliant’ lightly, , but it is not often that you see a system of this quality and feature set offered at such a ridiculously low price. It effectively replaces the LG iPECS SBG-1000 (and quite frankly leaves it for dead!).

It uses the same software architecture of its larger brother, the LG iPECS UCS 100 & eMG 800 phone system and lots of the same features as the iPECS UCP IP phone systems, but why would you pay more for a system that does the same thing….but cheaper. No logical person would.

Why is the Ericsson-LG eMG80 phone system so ridiculously affordable?

Well, it’s pretty simple. Ericsson-LG were losing their share of the market to inferior products, so they introduced a top quality product at a price point that the rest of the players can’t, or won’t, compete with. Now, this isn’t marketing hype but simple fact.

Do you need to use VoIP for the Ericsson-LG eMG80 PBX?

No. One of the great things about the iPECS eMG80 phone system is its designed to work with old-fashioned Telstra phone lines (PSTN or ISDN2 and even incredibly ISDN 10/ 20 and 30) as well as the latest SIP technology (for unbelievably cheap VoIP phone calls over the NBN or another high bandwidth internet connection). You decide. If for some reason you can’t, or aren’t ready to move to VoIP you can continue with your current phone line provider and setup while still enjoying all the systems features and benefits.

Then, when you’re ready and the NBN or an alternative high bandwidth internet service is available in your area, you can easily implement VoIP at any time. With the LG eMG80 PBX, you can change the way you make calls without having to change your hardware.

Is the Ericsson-LG eMG80 phone system NBN ready?

Yes. If you’re lucky enough to have NBN already in your area then you can start using this right away. If not, rest assured that then the NBN does come to your area your phone system is ready.

An intelligent hybrid solution – like the eMG80 PBX – is equipped for any eventuality, and this is just another reason it is such a phenomenal system. The price is simply the icing on the cake!

Connect your mobile phones, tablets and PCs to the phone system.

Yes, you read that correctly. The Ericsson-LG iPECS EMG80 phone system also offers additional applications for customers with mobile office workers:

iPECS UCS

Is an application for Android, Apple iOS smartphones & your desktop computer that connects you to your phone system where ever you are.

You simply have an app on your mobile or desktop that allows users to not only connect to the eMG80 phone system but also use much of the system’s functionality like a desk phone whether you’re in or out of the office – anywhere you get 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi.

Your staff can now be anywhere and still be seamlessly connected to the office LG eMG80 phone system. This is where overall phone technology is heading. It’s redefining the way many offices work and productivity and efficiency for many customers have gone through the roof. No more emailed messages, missed calls or ineffective communication with customers or other staff.

The iPECS UCS (Unified Communications System), also boosting the productivity of of our customers by allowing them to work anywhere in the world Your communications will be streamlined with features such as visual voicemail, instant messaging, video conferencing, collaboration whiteboard and so much more.

Can I expand the LG eMG80?

The eMG 80 PBX can expand up to 48 users as well as linking multiple business sites and/or multiple remote workers.Never have we seen a system at this price point that offers such a degree of expandability and flexibility.

Everything you need from one solution

The Ericsson LG iPECS phone system is a pure IP communication solution for small to medium-size businesses. In fact, the iPECS PBX will scale from 2 -2400 users across multiple sites so it can grow with you. This feature-rich solution offers customers uncompromising, proven technology that has helped the Ericsson LG iPECS phone system to become the largest selling PBX in Australia for under 100 handset businesses (the fact that Telstra has aggressively pushed the solution has also been part of this success). So, let’s see why so many businesses love this phone system.

Only start with the size you need

The current Ericsson LG iPECS phone systems come in different starting sizes to best suit your current requirements – Ericsson LG iPECS eMG100 phone system & iPECS UCP series. Beyond these, you move to the enterprise models which scale to tens of thousands of users.

Plus, the underlying technology in these systems is the same, so they can be combined to make any number of setups to suit your needs. As a result, you will end up with the system that suits your exact needs.

iPECS = Massive range of features & benefits

Like all the leading brands, the iPECS does everything you’d expect from a phone system and much more.

Key features of the iPECS IP PBX include:

  • Networking
  • Multimedia Applications
  • Unified Messaging
  • Unified Communications
  • Call Centre Applications
  • SoftPhone
  • PC Attendant
  • Mobility
  • Conferencing

The iPECS eMG phone system also supports a wide range of productivity-enhancing applications, such as Unified Communications, IP Call Recording, Mobility, built-in voicemail and UMS. Now, that is a lot of acronyms to take in at once, but put simply it means that no matter what industry you’re in, or what technology you’re trying to implement, the iPECS is a genuine solution for your company. At the bottom of this page, we go into more specific details about the applications available for you.

As always, we suggest that you speak with one of our expert consultants to tailor a solution to your specific needs and budget. Once they have a better understanding of what you’re trying to achieve and how you operate, they will also be able to explain not only how the technology works but how it can benefit your business.

Must you use VoIP for the Ericsson LG iPECS phone system?

The NBN is forcing all businesses small and large to move to use the internet to make phone calls. However, if the NBN is not available in your area yet, you may have no choice but to use traditional copper lines to make calls for now. So to answer the above question, no, you do not need to use VoIP. The iPECS PBX models are designed to integrate with all existing phone lines as well as the latest SIP (VoIP) and networking protocols. This means that you can still get all the latest technology but keep your existing copper phone lines. Then, when you’re ready to move to VoIP in the future the system will be ready, willing and able, and you can access the cost savings moving to VoIP can bring.

Is the LG iPECS PBX system NBN ready?

Yes. All purpose-built IP PBX systems are designed to work with the NBN and, in fact, work with the existing infrastructure anyway. NBN is quite misleading and when it comes to delivering you high-quality business-grade VoIP (SIP) phone calls, most businesses in metro areas can already get it right now. The NBN is only relevant for businesses with slow or unreliable data services – typically in more remote or regional areas.

Connect ANY type of Ericsson LG phone handsets to the iPECS

Both the iPECS eMG100 and UCP series PBX phone systems allow you to connect a wide variety of handsets to the system. The systems connect to both the latest IP enabled and digital handsets, plus also seemly integrate with a number of wireless handsets, giving you the ultimate flexibility to create a setup that will work for you. Here is a list of the extensive range of handsets available to mix and match from:

  • Ericsson LG LIP-9020 Phone Handset

In this article, we will go through a step by step guide to printing labels for the iPecs LIP 8000, iPecs LDP-9000, iPecs LIP-9000 & iPecs LIP-9200 Series handsets.

When your new phone system is delivered, you will see that each handset comes with a label sheet that is used to label each shortcut button on your phone. You can choose to manually write the labels for each shortcut button, however, if you want the cleaner look (or you’ve got really bad handwriting), this guide will give you step-by-step instructions on how to print them.

Fair warning: printing your labels can be a tricky and fiddly process because you’ll have to ensure lining everything up with your particular printer. But this guide aims to make it less tricky by walking you through the whole process.

Printing Labels For iPECS LIP-8000 Series

First, you will need to download the LIP-8000 label template here. This has the label templates for the LIP-8004D, LIP-8012D, LIP-8024D, LIP-8012DSS & LIP-8048DSS handsets.

Next, identify which handset you have and go to the appropriate sheet in excel. Then enter the names you would like to appear on your quick dial label’s.

Adding Names To iPECS 8000 Series Labels

When you have entered all the quick dial label’s you want, print the sheet. Quick Tip: Ensure you have the ‘No Scaling’ Option selected.

Finally, cut around the label’s you have just printed. Then slip off the protective plastic label cover from your handset and place your newly printed label’s behind, and place the cover back on. And you are done!

Printing Labels For iPECS LDP-9000 Series

Skip me ahead to the LIP-9000 Series Guide to printing labels

The first thing you’ll need to do is download our label templates for the LDP-9000 series, which you can find here.

You’ll notice that there are several different templates in the spreadsheet. This is because there is a different template depending on the phone & template you receive when your handsets are installed.

8 Button Extension

These labels are for the LDP-9008D.

30 Button Extension

These labels are for the LDP-9030D.

48 Button Extension

These label is for the LDP-9048DSS. If you require more than 30 shortcut keys, this addon replaces the shortcut keys on an LDP-9030D.

Printing Labels For The LDP-9000 Series

Steps For Creating labels

As we mentioned earlier, you can print these labels blank and then write on them by hand. However, this can get a bit messy, especially with the larger 48 and 30 extensions models.

The steps below will help guide you through the process of printing shortcut labels for you LDP-9000 series handset.

Step 1 – Download the Spreadsheet

If you haven’t done it already, download the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet for the iPecs LDP-9000 series labels here.

Step 2 – Enter your Contacts

Open the spreadsheet and type in the names of each person for whom you have a shortcut in the relevant space.

Step 3 – Print A Test On A4 Paper

Once you have all the names in the correct position, we advise that you don’t immediately print onto the labels that came with your handset. Printing a test on regular paper first will give you the chance to make sure everything is positioned correctly.

If you are anything like me and you don’t know if your printer prints on the top or bottom of the page, take a piece of A4 out of the printer and write ‘top’ on it. Place the paper back in the printer with the written side facing up.

Next,

Print a test version of your labels on the A4 paper. To print the labels ensure you have macros enabled in the spreadsheet, then click the print button on the right-hand side of the spreadsheet.

Next, overlay the test print on top of the supplied labels to check everything lines up. If you are satisfied that the names line up with the labels, you can go ahead to Step 4.

If your test print does not line up with the labels, re-enter the spreadsheet and change the offset values until you have everything lined up as you want.

What happens if my names are not printing in the right place?

If your test print does not line up with the labels that came with your phone, re-enter the spreadsheet and change offset values by using the tools on the right-hand side of your screen.

You may have to change offset values and do a re-test by printing the labels on plain A4 paper several times until you have everything lined up.

Step 4 – Print Labels For Real On The Pre-Perforated Paper

When you are sure that the labels on your A4 test print line up with the real labels that will go on your handset, it’s time to print for real.

Simply place your supplied labels in your printer.   Come back to the spreadsheet screen and click print (right-hand side of the spreadsheet).

Step 5 – Stick The Labels To The Handset

Now you have your printed labels you can gently separate them from the backing paper and stick them to your handset.

You have now finished printing and adding labels to your LDP-9000 Series phone.

Adding Handset Labels To Your LIP-9000 Series Phones

First thing is first; you’ll need to download the correct PowerPoint template for your handset or add-on, which you can find below:

Printing Handset Label’s For The LIP-9000 Series

While you do have the option of printing the labels blank and manually writing names on them, however, it tends to be neater to type the text onto the label before printing them. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1 – Downloaded The Correct Template

LIP-9010 | LIP-9012 | LIP-9020 | LIP-9024

Step 2 – Adding Names To Labels

Open your template and type the names of each person attached to the shortcuts on your phone. Remember to replace the demo ‘Key in here’ space with the first contact on your shortcut.

Step 3 – Print The Labels

To print, the labels go to the print section of PowerPoint. Ensure you have it set to ‘Print All Slides.’ Do not use ‘Scale to paper’ as this will leave everything too small.

Step 4 – Cut Out and Add To Handset

After printing the labels, you will need to cut around the gray areas so that each label set fits in its space on the phone.

After cutting around the gray line, open up the see-through window on the handset and place the labels inside.

If for some reason the labels do not match up, check to make sure your printer settings were set to ‘print at 100% scale’, then print and cut again.

You have now finished printing your labels.
